Accepting and being thankful for our differences doesn’t come easy. Slipping under the radar, blending in, and rolling with the tide allows us to feel comfortable and secure. But as we all know, our differences are what makes us human. They give our souls the ability to fully bloom and stretch out towards the sun rather than cowering in hiding.
I often feel misunderstood. I convince myself that if I show people the parts of me that are different, I will be rejected. Not all of this is unreasonable. I have been rejected for my differences many times. I know this is common for others as well.
So this year I have been trying to embrace all of what makes me who I am. Storyteller, feeler to my core, and wildly unsettled. I look at my differences as strengths. I look at my children’s personalities and strive to point out what parts of them are unique and worthy of praise too. I want them to walk through life feeling proud of each and every part of themselves.
This season I challenge you to do the same. Don’t run in fear from who you are. Explore your differences, and practice gratitude for the way God has made you. Allow yourself to unfold and be known–truly and genuinely.
Be thankful for your differences and love yourself just as you love others for the uniqueness they bring to humanity.
What personal differences can you learn to be thankful for?
